Watchung Library could close forever. Yes, it's true - on July 17th the Watchung Borough Council will vote on the future of Watchung Library. Council is considering a proposal that will permanently close Watchung Library.
Also under consideration are proposals to renovate our current library or to build a new library combined with a much needed community center. Each of these proposals would cost about $4 million dollars, which could be paid for with a 40-year bond. The cost would come to about $67 a year for the owner of a home in Watchung with the average assessed value. That comes to less than $1.30 a week.
Yes, less than $1.30 a week for the average Watchung homeowner will allow us to keep a library in our own town AND get a community center - which we'll appreciate when the next storm like Sandy comes along!
What you can do to keep a library in Watchung: We need to convince Council that Watchung DOES want its own library and CAN pay for it! You can show your support in these easy ways:
$1.30 donations can be made in cash or by check (payable to "Watchung Community Foundation"; please write "Watchung Library" in the memo section of your check). The Watchung Community Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable tax exempt organization dedicated to fundraising for Borough events and improvements.
- Come to the Kick-Off for the $1.30-a-Week Campaign. Bring $1.30, as your share for the week toward paying for a new library and community center, to Borough Hall at 10 AM on Friday, June 27th. Bring your kids with $1.30 in their piggy bank or their Barbie or Buzz Lightyear wallet! If children can afford it, Watchung can afford it!
- Each week between now and July 17th, stop by the library and pick up one of the brightly colored, labelled envelopes. Fill it out with the your name and address, insert $1.30 and either deliver the envelope to Borough Hall or leave it at the library for a volunteer to deliver to Council.
- Or mail or deliver $1.30 (cash or check) to Borough Hall along with your name and address and note saying "This is my share toward a new library for the week of ___________."
- Spread the word! Tell your friends that the library might close and what they can do to help keep a library in Watchung.
